Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a normal state of relaxation in which the
unconscious mind is working and the conscious mind is in a resting state. This state
often occurs naturally many times during the day when we "day dream".
Another example occurs when we are driving on a familiar highway and we "wake
up" at the end of the journey without a detailed memory of what happened during the
time we traveled between our origination point and our destination. Induced hypnosis
via a hypnotherapist is a way to take advantage of this natural relaxed state to gain
access to the subconscious mind.
Accessing the
subconscious mind can be very useful in order to "train" the conscious mind to
do things which we desire. The subconscious mind is our intellectual and emotional
powerhouse. The subconscious mind has far more resources to help us achieve what we
want than our conscious mind. When our conscious
mind is working and acting as "control center" for the brain, often there is an
"internal voice" or "gatekeeper" that gives us all the
"logical" reasons why we can or can not do what we desire. At times this
voice is very valuable and protects us from doing things that may endanger us. At
other times, (like when we are trying to stop a habit such as smoking), the conscious mind
gatekeeper can interfere. Thus, by taking advantage of an "induced"
hypnotic state, we can build a bridge between what we really want to do and our
unconscious mind, thus by-passing the gatekeeper that may be interfering. Hypnosis
can help the conscious and subconscious mind to work together as a much more powerful
team.
What can Life coaching/ NLP/ Hypnosis
accomplish? Use it to achieve what you desire: Goal setting and achievement. Improve
motivation, learning, and performance. Want some great tools for improving your
ability to spell, remember information, get your goals? Got something you've always
wanted to do but have been afraid to just do it?
Reduce Stress/Increase Relaxation.
Pain Reduction. You can reduce
pain, or create areas on your body that feel no pain (for instance if you have to take
shots regularly you can make a numb spot!)
End limiting fears (e.g. public
speaking, crowds, heights, animals). Increase self-confidence and self image.
Stop limiting habits (e.g. overeating,
smoking, nail biting, uncontrolled anger). Hypnosis has been shown to be the most
effective method for effectively ending a smoking habit.
What is Hypnosis like?
- Hypnosis is a state of Relaxation. In many cases you
will not be able to tell a difference between being awake and being under hypnosis.
You may only feel a slight or deeper state of relaxation than your normal resting state.
- It is a choice to be Hypnotized. You can only be hypnotized if you wish to be. You have to
decide that the benefits of getting past your gatekeeper and
tapping into the power of your subconscious mind with
the help of a Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist is the right thing for you to choose to do.
- You are in Control. You can not be
"made" to do something you do not wish to do. Your morals remain intact under
hypnosis. Stage
Hypnotists are very good at selecting people who like to "Ham it up" on stage
and thus they find people willing to do all the silly things the Hypnotist suggests. A hypnotherapist is only
interested in helping you achieve a specific outcome. If
you decide you would like to do a few things via Hypnotherapy that you normally wouldn't
do (and they are safe for you to do) so you can have such an experience that can certainly
be arranged!
- Interference with hynotic state. If someone tries suggests something that your conscious mind doesn't
like you will come out of the 'trance". If hypnotists really could really get
"control" over someone, wouldn't they
would always have someone to take out the garbage or do all the tasks in life that they
would prefer not to do? A lot
more people would certainly want to take advantage of learning hypnosis if this were true,
wouldn't you?
- You are aware of what is going on. You can hear and
often do remember everything that is said while you are under hypnosis.
- Hypnosis is a temporary state. You will always
eventually "wake up" from a hypnotic state, just as you do when you are driving
or daydreaming. Or if you do hypnosis late at night, you may find that you fall into
a natural sleep during or after you start hypnosis because you are so relaxed.
- Hypnosis is different from sleeping. Some
individuals who are in a "trance" appear to be sleeping, although they are not.
Typcially your eyes will close or they may not when you are hypnotized. Most people
get the best state of relaxation with their eyes are closed. It is a nice idea
to sit in a comfortable chair or lie down to get the most benefit of the relaxation in
hypnosis.
How
should Hypnotherapy be done?
- Only if you give your permission.. Deep
hypnotic trances should only be done with the permission of the person being
hypnotized. It is actually pretty difficult (and unethical) to do it any other
way.
- Your outcome is most important. What is said to you
when you are under hypnosis should be derived from as many of your own words as possible,
so that it will be most effective. A good hypnotherapist will design the entire
session around what you want to have happen (your outcome) and use your words in a
hypnotic style to gain access to your subconscious mind. This method will
deliver the very best outcome. This is different from stage hypnosis, which is only
to create a "playful" atmosphere, rather than to achieve an outcome. When
you decide you want to use hypnosis to tap into the power of your mind, find a
hypnotherapist you trust because you know they will be focussed on YOUR outcome.
- Self Hypnosis. You can listen to self Hypnosis
tapes that you have purchased, although they tend to be effective in a relatively small
percentage of the cases (Perhaps around 30%),. A good hypnotherapist can train you
to hypnotize yourself to use your own language to achieve a desired outcome. Or the
therapist can make a custom tape for you. These custom methods would probably be
more effective than generic tapes because they are geared to what your mind wants most to
hear and feel.
- You should feel great after Hypnosis. You should
come out of Hypnosis feeling refreshed. It should feel as though you've had a
great nap (without any side effects!).
- You should work with your health care professional
as appropriate. For any work related to a medical condition (e.g.
relaxation related to headaches/migraines, or reduction in response to an allergic
condition) you should always obtain a referral from your physician and should work closely
with your doctor to resolve these issues. Hypnosis is not, under any circumstance, a
substitute "treatment" for illness. You should inform your
hypnotherapist of any prescription drugs you are taking or if you are under the care of a
physician/psychologist for any related issues. In some cases hypnosis is contraindicated
or a drug may interfere with a trance state.
What tools can a Life Coach offer?
A coach is an objective party with special knowledge
and skills who can understand your desires and needs while helping you to use your very
best qualities and resources most effectively. Your coach can recommend whether
Hypnosis or NLP might be beneficial in your situation.
Cay Villars is a

Hypnotherapy is only used at the request of the Client or after agreement is
developed between client and coach.
. Coaching sessions can be short (one or two
sessions) to achieve a short term goal, or over months, in order to achieve longer term
goals. Coaching can occur in person, email or on the phone. A typical session
lasts between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes.
