Online Travel: Agencies and
Software
There are numerous hotel, airline and travel agency sites,
including Travelocity- where you can compare
prices, book airlines and cars online. (You will need to register at their site.)
and Microsoft's Expedia,
Expedia Resources. You can
even pick your airline seat from the plane layout map provided. We don't use these
online services, because we find them to be too slow for making travel
reservations... We do find their searchable databases that allow you to pull up
useful travel information about locations around the world very helpful.
When it comes to making travel reservations we highly
recommend United's Connection software (Free download). Using United Connection you can
easily link into a travel reservation system and make all your own airline, hotel and
rental car arrangements. (over 500 airlines, 45 rental car companies and 30,000
hotels worldwide). We have not used the online version, United Connection on the Web, since we like the
software so much. The software connects to the internet via a modem. To download the
software: Go to http://www.ual.com. Select products and
services. Select United connection and press go. Or call 1-800-854-2112 for more information.
The program will do "fare shopping" for the
lowest airfares. If you're flying United you can even make your seat selection.
Not all airlines and flights are available, but most of the larger companies are
part of the system. We've noticed that many of the fares via the internet are much
lower than you can obtain by calling in to the reservation line/travel agent and you can
get bonus frequent flyer miles from United every time you book a flight through the
system. While we still occasionally book flights through a travel agent, we access
United Connection to quickly find out what is available.
Finally, we know even the most dedicated of you take
vacations. So go to Expedia's Fare
Tracker. Tell them where you want to go, they'll email you weekly with the most cost
effective fares for your dream destination.
