Some additional tips to
bear in mind:
- Search thoroughly for invisible parties with potential claims to patents/inventions.
- Be prepared to go over the basics of business practice and patent law.
- Have your own interpreter, not one supplied by the other side.
- Clearly understand the prior patent filings and disclosures.
- Make sure that all documents are translated into both Russian and English.
- Speed is not as much of a priority as relationship building with Russian technology
owners.
- Know priorities and expectations of the technology owner at each stage of discussions.
- Don't assume that technology assignment guarantees technology transfer!

Mr. Ruddy is president of Trykor, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based firm specializing in
technology transfer and business activities with Russia. Mr. Ruddy lived in Moscow for
nearly two years managing biomedical R&D projects. He started a company based on
Russian medical technologies which went public last year. He is also president of the
Lopukhin Foundation for Non-Invasive Diagnostics, a new non-profit foundation promoting
technical conferences in Russia and collaborations between Russian and American scientific
