You can either do that by having your own business where others are generating income for you, or you can select various investment vehicles to grow money that you have saved. (And no, your two weeks per year of paid vacation does not count.)  

One of the best investment opportunities over the long term is in the stock market.   Most of us have some sort of retirement account, whether it be a SEP, KEOGH, 401K, or IRA. And by and large we are responsible for supporting ourselves in our retirement.  We think we all better become experts at investing, or the word retired won't be a word we can use in reference to ourselves in our golden years.  As a side note, if you have a 401K we strongly recommend that you dedicate as much of your earnings to that fund as you can.  The combination of tax savings, your employer match, and the deferred taxes on appreciation of the account makes a 401k (or similar plan) simply one of the most profitable investments that you can make.
